Fuchs is the German word for “fox” and a common surname of German origin; the registrant of Fuchs.co.uk has been holding on it for several years.
A man named Christian Fuchs, who just so happen to bear the exact same name as a Leicester soccer player, attempted to get the domain from its registrant.
Fuchs’s complaint to Nominet, keepers of the .CO.UK TLD, was met with a surprising response, however.
Fuchs expected to get the “family name” but was told that since he holds no trademark, nor trades as “Fuchs,” the domain is fair game for anyone to do as they please with it.
The domain Fuchs.co.uk is currently listed for sale at Sedo, with an asking price of 500 GBP.
According to the Stoke Sentinel:
He claimed hyperlinks showed that the ‘fuchs.co.uk’ address was being offered for sale or rent, at a price of up to £55-a-month.
Mr Fuchs said he had offered to buy the domain name, but had “received no reply”.
Rejecting his complaints, however, Nominet said there was “nothing objectionable per se about trading in domain names”.
Fuchs’s complaint that the domain name was an “abusive registration” in its registrant’s possession was thus rejected.
Even today, the rules and regulations regarding domain ownership rights are not easily understood by the average Joe.
