With more than 3 million Google results, the number “42195” is not an ordinary number.
For those of you not into the metric system, 42195 represents the number of meters in a marathon.
Around the world, when the term “26.2k” isn’t used with reference to the number of miles in the distance of a marathon, 42195 is the magic number that marathon runners need to crunch.
More importantly, it’s the representation of the original Olympic marathon race, in Athens, Greece – back in 1896.
When searching for “42195” in Google, the #1 result is not a dot com surprisingly. It’s a dot .ES – the ccTLD for Spain – which has been developed into a marathon race portfolio with results and photos from the race participants.
Meanwhile, today Sunday, racers completed the Athens Classic Marathon – all 42195 meters of it.
Despite the rainy and windy weather, a new race record was set for men; Moroccan marathoner Boubker finished in 2 hours 11 minutes and 40 seconds.
A special shout out to friend Nikos Toulgeroglou who ran his first ever marathon, finishing at 3h:22m:30s
