As Twitter turns 4 no signs of making money via social networks yet

Tweet! Tweet!

It’s Twitter’s fourth anniversary today and despite it being the number #12 destination on the Internet, there are no signs of any user-generated revenue yet.

We recently wrote about how Twitter is potentially the secret buyer of Retweet.com – at a price of a quarter of a million dollars.

That’s $250,000 for the dyslexic among you.

So how are social networks and the like making money from the sheer amount of traffic they command daily?

Short answer: they don’t.

Recently, Facebook surpassed Google for an entire week as the single most visited web site on the Internet.

Unlike Twitter though, Facebook is making money from ads it streams very effectively. This advertising revenue is obviously not of the magnitude required to provide for the entire business but at least, it’s money coming in.

Twitter hasn’t so far introduced any viable monetization models in its endless stream of tweets, which recently surpassed 10 billion. That’s a lot of text messages – not to mention, man-hours.

So happy birthday Twitter and thanks for all the aimless waste of time you provide us 😀
