Boca Raton: Two news publications in domain face-off

Boca News Now operates its online publication from BocaNewsNow.com since its launch in 2011. Meanwhile The Boca Raton Tribune is a print publication that has been around since 2000, operating from bocaratontribune.com.

A year ago, someone registered BocaNewsNow.net, .org, and .info and although the WHOIS is protected, it’s easy to guess who did the deed, as they all point to bocaratontribune.com.

Naturally, Boca News Now is livid and they are in the process of initiating legal action against the newspaper’s publisher, Douglas Heizer.

According to an editorial published today, under the title “Desperate Competitor Squats BocaNewsNow Domains“, Boca News Now states:

“BocaNewsNow is a registered trademark of MetroDesk Media, LLC, and is on file with the State of Florida. We have not authorized any other publication or entity to use our intellectual property”

We weren’t able to locate the trademark at Sunbiz Florida, but then again, the agency is in the process of a database migration. The editorial ends thus:

“We look forward to Douglas Heizer releasing the domains before our attorneys have a chance to dot their i’s and cross their t’s.”

If indeed The Boca Raton Tribune registered the domains in an attempt to divert traffic from the .com, that action is not only unethical, but rather impractical; the .com is always king.
