Fidel Castro favorite, Elian Gonzalez, still does not own his .com

In Cuba, owning a domain is considered a luxury but Marxism is free.

Ten years ago, little Elian Gonzalez became the focus of American media, after he was found floating off the shores of Florida, while his mother drowned.

Aged just five years old then, he was heralded by the Cuban community in Miami and his relatives as a little hero, a sign of protest against Fidel Castro’s lengthy stronghold on the island of Cuba.

Now 16, the once little boy with short black hair is an enthusiastic member of Fidel Castro’s elite Young Communist Union. It’s like the Boy Scouts, only reading is about Marx, communism and how to be anti-American and has nothing to do with tying complex knots or singing by the fire.

At a lengthy speech that lasted seven and a half hours, Fidel Castronow a former ruler of Cuba since his younger brother took over – spoke of Elian Gonzalez quite fondly; here’s an excerpt:

“… And that day we showed capitalist America that the soul of Marxism, the power of the people and the soul of Cuba and its fighters – fighters under one flag with one star that is stronger than the many stars of the American flag – won! We won, people of Cuba, my friends, my coworkers in the upwards course of Cuban progress! Capitalism means that you own things you do not need. Cuban patriots do not need luxury cars, do not need color television – no, we have the souls pure and not surrendered to Capitalism! Cubans do not need Internet, that ugly monster of Capitalist disease, Cubans do not need web sites and domain names. I show you as an example little Elian Gonzalez, now a Cuban man of 16 years of age. Elian Gonzalez escaped the claws of the American Capitalism. He refused to surrender to luxuries. He was told to stay and even as a young man he was offered ElianGonzalez.com to buy. For what? Men and Women of Cuba, on this very day I ask you to stay clear from the satanic luxuries of American Capitalism. All hail Cuba! Venceremos!”

It is clear from Fidel Castro’s speech that he is not a proponent of modern society’s luxuries, including the right of people to their own name as a .com or other TLD. Perhaps because FidelCastro.com is long parked, the aged former ruler of Cuba continues to believe that Marxism is alive and kicking.

Meanwhile, ElianGonzalez.com is still up for sale, ten years later.
