Flare Watch: One name, two brands, a lot of embarrassment!

Need streaming TV? No, just a good dermatologist.

Need streaming TV? No, just a good dermatologist.

When companies come up with creative names for their products and services, they’d better do some research first.

Not just any type of superficial research, but rather, deep digging about the past and present status of the proposed brand.

Apparently, Cox Communications did none of that when they announced the launch of Flare Watch.

For $35 per month, Cox offers its subscribers in Orange County, California 97 TV channels of streaming content, as well as 30 hours of cloud DVR storage, without cable television being a prerequisite service.

That’s fantastic and looks quite promising, per the Cox Flare Watch portal.

Unfortunately, searching for “Flare Watch” in Google brings up FlareWatch.com as the top result. Quite naturally so, as FlareWatch.com is a developed web site, offering a service and app that monitors a number of skin, allergic and auto-immune system conditions.

According to FlareWatch.com:

“With FlareWatch, you can easily track your or your loved one’s flares. FlareWatch makes it easy to enter flare metric information. In addition, FlareWatch finds weather data for your city and zip code. When it’s time to visit your rheumatologist, FlareWatch easily generates and allows you to print out a report summarizing your historical flare information for your doctor. With this, your doctor can get a visual picture of your daily flares going back to your last visit.”

Imagine what will happen when the Cox Communications service takes off, after its current testing period! 😀

Definitely a lot of potential for brand confusion and a load of free traffic to FlareWatch.com.
