Gloria Mackenzie is 84 years old; she’s also the Powerball jackpot winner, claiming today all $590,000,000 of it.
News of her identity, the revealing of which is mandatory in Florida, quickly spread on social media.
As expected, the registration of GloriaMackenzie.com followed within minutes; the domain was grabbed by someone in Shreveport, Louisiana – according to DomainTools.
Unless the registrant is related to the elderly winner, Gloria Mackenzie, this could be really bad karma for the registrant.
Think about it: with all that cash, Gloria Mackenzie can afford to retain 100 lawyers that’d get her domain name in no time. 😀

I doubt if she even cares about that.
Heck, with $590,000,000, I certainly wouldn’t give a damn.

But does Gloria Mackenzie really care about owning her domain?
It’s worthless.
She might not care but her estate & other beneficiaries do.
They’re probably going to create a bunch of funds to manage the millions because when she dies, 50% goes to Uncle Sam.
So, the person that reged it might get a day or two of traffic…….so what
As long as there are more than one Gloria Mackenzies in the world, she wouldn’t have a case anyway.
Alan – Actually, there is a case: the timing of registration coincides with the announcement of the winner’s name, so that shows a particular intent and person being targeted. This isn’t a case of multiple people sharing the same name. But even then, it takes one of the many to file a lawsuit or UDRP, in the same sense that multiple holders of a trademark (in different classes) can file a UDRP against a non-tm holder for the domain.
I will add that such a registration is tasteless, as well.
I don’t mean to stereotype here… but how many 84 year olds in Florida named “Gloria” do you know who even know what a domain name is? Let alone, how many who would understand the concept of a perceived “right” to a domain name consisting of their own name. Then, furthermore, how many would suddenly want it by virtue of a sudden nine-figure lottery win.
This might be a cool name to see how much traffic it garners in the days preceding the win. But just as nobody knows the names of winners of monster jackpots in previous years, it is very unlikely that anybody will be talking about Ms. Mackenzie in a year from now.
In fact, I’ll bet articles that relate to the REGISTRATION of this domain name will get more hits than the domain name will get in type-in traffic.
