ICANN quandary: Who gets to be the .GAY operator?

Dot .GAY is at stake.

In the next two weeks, ICANN will deliver its final decision on who gets to operate the new gTLD, dot .GAY.

Apparently, the current applicants that met the ICANN policy requirements aren’t truly representing gay people – or to be politically correct, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals (LGBT).

Since these aren’t community applications, there is concern about how a large group of individuals will be represented by a gTLD that has the potential to be commercialized and not representative of their viewpoints.

The issue boils down to whether dot .GAY should be a strictly for-profit marketplace, or whether it must be operated as a community, where members can support their own organizations.

Either way, ICANN appears to be holding a “hot potato”, as discussed in this article at the Huffington Post.
