The Icelandic government is seeking a ban on all ‘pornography‘, which encompasses the Internet as well.
We’re used to seeing this phenomenon in totalitarian regimes, such as China, North Korea, or ultra-conservative nations, such as India.
But what do the Icelanders have to say about such an anti-pornography initiative, that can violate the right to free speech among others?
The anti-porn proposal by the interior minister, Ogmundur Jonasson, has stirred plenty of trouble already. Those opposing the pending bill, say that such a decision would censor the web, and undermine Iceland’s reputation as a Northern European strong-hold of free speech.
Apparently, those elected at Iceland’s parliament want to use the weak argument that anyone under the legal age, can type ‘porn‘ in Google and get a screenful of steaming pornography. Isn’t it, however, the responsibility of parents to regulate Internet access and prevent their children from accessing it?
Iceland is holding elections in April, and the highly unpopular coalition government could be ending its rule by then.
Meanwhile, Sex.is, a highly searched-for keyword, is forwarding to an adult toy store, Adam & Eva.
Would they be forced to surrender the domain name, Sex.is, if such a broad, censoring law passed in Iceland? Hmmm? 😀
