Registry snafu: Cache of ‘bad domains’ impossible to delete!

A large portfolio of domain names that are characterized by their poor to bad quality, are impossible to delete.

Remaining intact for the 57th day at the Registry, the .com and .net domains repeatedly failed to respond to system requests for deletion.

Cris Matthews, Domain Deletion manager for Verisign, spoke about the incident, and what the Registry plans to do:

“We are aware of this problem, not a huge issue really, but regardless, domains that somehow fail to delete are considered problematic. The core issue is a malfunctioning microcode that refutes all attempts to interface the domain with the Registry API. We are sending in experts to tweak the microcode and issue a hard reset,” said Cris Matthews.

While the issue is “trivial” according to Verisign, it has the potential of creating havoc; if ‘stale’ domains were to be kept on the Registry for months and years, the data would become overly saturated, leading to the corruption of important domains.

“At this time, there is no danger for your quality .com or .net domain to sustain any damage, everything is under control,” said Cris Matthews.

“If there is an emergency situation we will let everyone know, but really, go out and enjoy the day!” added Matthews, laughing.

If you have been trying to delete your low quality .com or .net domains for the past eight weeks or so, have a little more patience – it will happen, eventually.
