Target credit card theft: A pending class action lawsuit?

The security breach leading to the theft of several million credit card credentials from Target, is a black eye for the diligent consumer.

Target UDRP was denied.

Target denied its customers relaxed shopping this season.

If you used your Target cards at the stores, between November 27th and December 15th, odds are that your details have been compromised by a group of hackers, most likely based in Eastern Europe.

While Target has issued an alert notifying its millions of shoppers about the incident, no one should consider themselves to be safe:

  • You do not need to call us unless you found charges on your account that you didn’t make.
  • You will not be held liable for any fraudulent charges.
  • We have made changes to our REDcard fraud detection and authorization procedures to further protect you.
  • We are offering free credit monitoring for one year to every single person who was impacted by this crime. We will give you more information about that soon.

Unfortunately for Target, their offering – on top of an one time 10% discount gift – appears to be rather problematic; it seems that several consumers are preparing to launch a class action lawsuit against the retail giant.

Target owns the domain name TargetClassAction.com since 2003, according to DomainTools, but someone just registered TargetClassActionLawsuit.com and they are offering it for $2,950.

The problem with such domain sales, is the obvious trademark infringement that is manifested; the same domain name, if it were registered as a protest site or as a pointer secured by a law office, would not face the same issues, most likely.
