Trademarked: The Right Domain Name Can Change Your Life

Mike Berkens dropped the ‘G’ bomb today, announcing that the Domain King, Rick Schwartz, has been busy registering gTLD domains.

Congratulations to Rick for this bold move, as Frank Schilling’s phrase comes to mind: “The right domain name can change your life.” 😀

The latter is now a trademark, as Uniregistry applied for it at the USPTO back in February.

At the time, it was an “intent to use” application, and naturally Uniregistry has been using it on its promotional materials and web site ever since.

In terms of procedure, the application will be published for opposition on June 24th, and the classes targeted are IC 045. US 100 101. G & S: Domain name registration services.

Incidentally, Uniregistry secured TheRightDomainNameCanChangeYourLife.com as well.

That’s how things work in the new era of Internet names: build and launch the brand as a gTLD, and defensively secure the .com.

I’m not falling for no banana in the tail pipe this time!!.
If he did register a ton of new gTLD’s , the phrase that comes to minds is another one bites the dust.

brand – Life is stranger than fiction 😀

OK, so i read ricks response over on the domains blog.
He said he bought them as a joke, keywords like crappy.whatever lousy.whatever, but his feeling for the new extensions remain the same.
He said he may use them for sites like his hallofshame site.

    brand – 500 domains x $20 = $10,000+
That’s quite an expensive joke. I think Rick’s smarter than that. Investing in gTLDs is the smart thing to do.

  6. brand says:

Your right, $10,000 is a lot of money, but it’s about $100 to a guy that’s made million’s off of domaining IMO.
As far as the new gTLD’s being the smart thing to do, sure is, if you want to keep paying the registries high registrations and renewals.
I have said before, when i see a commercial on tv where a company has spent major advertising dollar’s on a .whatever, then i may think twice.
At this point no one in the business community has ever heard of these new extensions, and when they do, will they ever be taken seriously .
I don’t even think google recognizes the new extensions yet, the one’s that i have looked up all revolve to the .com.
This is going to take many years for all this to catch on, in the mean time people can have fun watching there money disappear paying high renewals.
If and when this does catch on with the business public and i fell i may want to grab a few, i’m sure the aftermarket will be flooded at that time.

Don’t you think it is a very long sentence/trademark?

I guess beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, and so is goodness of a domain or trademark 🙂

  8. DomainGang says:

simple-man – It’s a distinct phrase that serves as a selling point for a brand. Whether it’s “Just do it”, or “I’M THE BEST, NOBODY CAN BEAT ME, I’LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN” a trademark functions as a brand or a complement to a brand.

  9. .ph says:

    @brand

Really? What brand beer do you drink? What brand soda does your family like?

What make of car do you drive? What make of car will you consider buying? What airlines do you fly? What music do you listen to?

What do you like to eat? Which places do you like to vacation in?

If you have to “think twice” about a brand simply because you see them advertise an extension you do not approve of, you’ll be doing an awful lot of thinking twice.

Hell, you might even have to sell your television .brand and get off your .ass and mow your lawn with .scissors.
