Verisign celebrates 17 years in a quiet fashion

Verisign is the dot com and dot net Registry.

Verisign, the domain Registry for dot .com and dot .net domains, celebrated its 17th anniversary on April 12th.

There were no parties, fanfare or other glitzy parties reminiscent of the roaring 90’s, when millions were spent by start-ups in lavish demonstrations of paper wealth.

The dot com bubble burst, but not before Verisign acquired Network Solutions in 2000.

Ten years later, Verisign sold its authentication business unit – which included SSL,  (secure socket layer), PKI (public key infrastructure), Verisign Trust Seal, and Verisign Identity Protection (VIP) services – to Symantec for $1.28 billion dollars.

While some criticize Verisign for abusing its monopoly by jacking up prices by 7% every year, Verisign remains a great place to work in the domain industry.

Happy 17th to Verisign – enjoy a short video about corporate life at Verisign below.
