Viagra: How spam skyrocketed 15 years ago

Spam emails are like an open, infested wound that gets sprinkled with non-kosher salt, non-stop.

Billions of emails are sent every year, that serve no purpose other than to promote semi-legal or illegal services.

From cheap medications to knock-off Gucci bags, spam is not going to end anytime soon.

A certain event, 15 years ago, is responsible for a large percentage of spam emails: The FDA approval of the Viagra pill.

Marking its 15th anniversary this month, sildenafil citrate had been patented in the US only two years prior to its approval in March 1998.

Since then, billions of emails about viagra, and its typo variations designed to evade spam filters, have filled the electronic mailboxes of men and women alike; spammers make no distinction about who receives these emails.

The idea is simple: out of billions of emails, a few will place an order, or will be sold other services and products.

So, happy birthday Viagra and thanks a bunch for the spam heaven that you’ve created. Not!
