World record holder’s death terminates domain’s lifespan

Registering domains of the names of famous people might not be a profitable idea after all, especially when their fame is ephemeral.

Unfortunately, well-liked He Pingping – world’s shortest man in the world at 2 feet 5 inches tall – died some time last week in Rome. Born in Wulanchabu, China, with a form of primordial dwarfism, He Pingping was officially recognized as the world’s shortest adult in March 2008.

He Pingping died from a heart attack, aged just 21. He was a fanatic smoker but still, an inspiration to those around him.

Somehow, the domain HePingping.com was registered a few years earlier, in 2007 – when He Pingping was only 18 and then unofficially the shortest man in the world.

Regardless, the owner of HePingping.com is now facing the subsequent loss of their virtual property for a very simple reason:

Unlike celebrities such as actors, athletes, singers and politicians, the holders of Guinness world records are instantly leapfrogged by the second in line, should they die.

Rest in peace, He Pingping.
