Would you trust your wife with your domain Auth/EPP code?

Pretty much, you can only trust one person in life: yourself.

We’re not quite sure how a case of a husband snooping into his wife’s email was turned into a legal battle, but the bottom line is: Do you trust your significant other with accessing your domain accounts and other such credentials?

A good friend of mine has a great relationship with his wife and they share 10 years of marriage and two wonderful kids. They also have separate bank accounts and his wife doesn’t know exactly how much money he makes.

In domaining, certain type of information when shared can compromise the contents of an account. Give your spouse your username and password to your registrar account(s) and they can do as they please with them.

While trust matters in relationships, it’s not really necessary to share this type of information all the way.

If you’re concerned about having an accident that would remove you from this world and want to share certain information with the closest people in your family, there are safety valves that will allow you to keep the information private until after you gain your “angel wings”. 😀

Regarding bank accounts, here’s an option:

Joint Tenants With Rights of Survivorship (JTWROS): This account is established in the names of two or more persons by signing a survivorship agreement. The survivor(s) take all sums on deposit upon the death of one person. The funds on deposit at the time of death do not become part of the estate of the deceased.

With regards to secret passwords, one can most definitely create a will, with all information safely stored with a qualified attorney.

Social networks, such as Facebook and myspace and email providers such as Gmail have certain requirements in place to deliver account information to the “next of kin” if you pass away.

Of course, the best option would be to share a mutual, blind trust with your spouse or significant other. However, as humans we are not perfect and there is always a chance for someone to betray that trust.

Better be a safe domainer, than a sorry one 😀
