wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.com – 25 years of the World Wide Web

Twenty-five years from the inception of the World Wide Web, its creator has urged the public to re-engage with its original design: a decentralized internet that at its very core, remains open to all.

With that in mind, Yahoo! and the World Wide Web Foundation bought the domain name wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.com to celebrate the 25th birthday of the World Wide Web.

The domain was sold on Sedo, for $2,500.

The WorldWideWeb is 20 years old today.

Welcome to the World Wide Web, kids.

This is not a joke.

Tobias Flaitz, CEO of Sedo commented:

“So much has happened in the 25 years since the World Wide Web became part of the public conscious – to say that it has changed recent history would be an understatement.

“This domain is pretty special as two of the biggest names in the industry – Marissa Mayer and Sir Tim Berners Lee – are inviting people to celebrate the birthday of the World Wide Web with them. That’s got to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m sure a lot of people will be hoping they are on the guest list.”
