10 Reasons why you Should Not be a Domainer

D'oh!

You’ve heard all the fluff: You can become a domain “investor” or a domain “broker” without having put together as much as a cover letter before.

Unfortunately, as Rick Schwartz has pointed out, experience in the field matters. Before you can make the big bucks achieved by Rick, you too must be willing to grind your face onto the wonderful world of sales.

But there are some people who are simply not cut for the “job” of being a domainer. Nothing wrong with that, and here’s a list of 10 reasons that should help you find out!

10 Reasons why you Should Not be a Domainer:

  1. You joined the domain game in the late 2000’s. What? Someone told you otherwise? They were right – but the requirement is that you should already have a stash of money in the bank to invest in quality inventory. Big difference.
  2. You’re not committed 100% to the domain game. If you’re a passer by to any city, you’d never own a house there. To build a house, you need to commit to the city and its offerings.
  3. You’re prone to believe a lot of hot air existing in the domain industry. If you can’t form your own opinions and act upon them, please don’t even bother reading past this point.
  4. You’re easily intimidated by the old guard. The folks that set up tent before you have a nice spot with a nice view and proximity to the woods and the river. But if you don’t go greet them, if you don’t approach these old-timers of domaining you’ll remain in the far end of the hills. Just where the raccoons live.
  5. You have nothing new to bring to the domain game. If you’re not willing or unable to create, improvise, generate or devise anything new for the domain industry then you’re not just a bore, you’re useless. Industries don’t need fans, they need workers. Be one. The best you can be.
  6. You’re secretive and/or pump out a lot of hype. Let’s face it: you can be the best and the world won’t know, so what good is it? Or the flip side: you can be mediocre and truly bad and your artificial steam comes out non-stop; only problem is, you will be caught. There is no room for bullcrap in the domain industry.
  7. You’re not a person that honors their word. This single trait will disqualify you from any industry, not just domaining. If you lack in the ethics sector, either seek help – professional and personal – immediately, or be prepared to be sidelined by the entire domain team.
  8. Your attention span lasts a short while. The length of your career in any field is related to the type and length of your attention span. Do what you do with dedication. The moment you quit, that’s the day you need to find another occupation. Stay on the edge of things and you should succeed.
  9. You’re selfish, egomaniac and unwilling to accept the opinions and success of others. Team sports can’t have heroes. To be a hero you need to involve the entire team. If you don’t have a team but want to be the leader, build your own team. But never throw it under the bus.
  10. You’re a bad investor with no nest egg. When you make, you must also save. Savings can be in the form of money or in the form of investments. Choose your options carefully; re-invest in the industry that makes you the money: Domaining.

It’s not a deal breaker if you currently fall in any of the above categories. It *will* be a deal breaker if you fail to recognize your faults and weaknesses and fail to act upon them.
Good luck with the wonderful world of domaining! 😀
