BuildingSigns.com owner applies for matching trademark registration

NY-based Alice Wonder LLC have applied for the registration of the mark BUILDINGSIGNS.COM with the USPTO.

The application lists the following products and services as related to the mark:

Non-luminous and non-mechanical metal signs

The trademark application cites date of first use in commerce January 15, 2016. It also lists first use of the mark “anywhere” on April 13, 2013.

The domain BuildingSigns.com was registered in 2005; it appears to have been acquired by the current registrant in April 2013. The previous registrant and seller of the domain is DataCube.com, domain investors and operators of a large, quality portfolio.

Why was BUILDINGSIGNS.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.
