Datacenters.com: Uni Market sold domain applies for trademark registration

The operators of the premium domain Datacenters.com have applied for the registration of the matching mark, DATACENTERS.COM.

The application at the USPTO involves four distinct applications, each for different classes; the mark consists of a design plus words:

The mark consists of a diamond positioned inside a broken outline of a diamond, with the diamond and diamond outline shaded differently. The literal element DATACENTERS.COM is positioned to the right of the diamonds and includes DATACENTERS in capital letters with COM in lowercase letters. CENTERS is shaded differently from DATA and .COM.

Datacenters.com was sold on the Uni Market in 2013, then known as Domain Name Sales. Formerly an asset of the Marchex domain portfolio, Datacenters.com was sold for $190,000 dollars. Source: Namebio.

Why was the domain name Datacenters.com applied for as a trademark with the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
