NavyChief.com has applied for #trademark registration at the USPTO

Maryland based company NavalTees LLC, operators of the domain NavyChief.com, have applied for the registration of the mark NAVYCHIEF.COM with the USPTO.

The mark consists of standard characters, without claim to any particular font style, size, or color.  The words “Navy” and “Chief” combined to read as one word “NavyChief” and followed by a “.com” to read as NavyChief.com in various formats.

It’s interesting to note that while the date of first use is claimed to be 10/1/1997, the domain NavyChief.com was registered in 1999. There are no prior WHOIS records at DomainTools and Archive.org doesn’t return content older than 1999 for this domain name.

The NAVYCHIEF.COM mark is being claimed for the following services:

Why was NAVYCHIEF.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD. We keep track of these applications, and so far none has been decided upon.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
