RentSucks.com: Trademark application at the #USPTO after #domain sale

The operators of RentSucks.com have applied for the registration of the matching trademark, RENTSUCKS.COM.

Filed at the USPTO, the mark was applied for the following services:

Rentsucks.com is a Real Estate Marketing firm that helps inform, educate, and link up 1st time Home and Commercial Real Estate buyers with trusted local Real Estate, Mortgage and Insurance professionals.

Sounds more like a mission statement than a list of services but that should not be a problem. The application lists January 1, 2021 as the day of first use of the mark. The domain RentSucks.com appears to have been sold sometime in 2020, after it was listed for sale on the Uniregistry Market and DAN. The sale, however, seems to have taken place via Afternic.

Registered in 2017 after a drop and a subsequent catch via DropCatch, the domain existed as far back as in 2000; it has dropped and was re-registered several times since.

Why was RENTSUCKS.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD. We keep track of these applications, and so far none has been decided upon.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
