China’s 14 billion yuan domain market is old news!

China‘s local domain market is worth 14 billion yuan, and that’s the latest released data from 2015.

In other words, that’s old news.

During the Global Domain Summit held last week in Xiamen, China, some of the data presented involved the numbers of Chinese domain extensions, including IDN domains.

Mao Wei, head of the Chinese-language domain development alliance, said that among all the Chinese-language domain names, 78% have used .中国 (.wangzhi) as their top-level domain name.

Mao said China is the world’s second-largest market for the traditional domain names, and the largest market for new gTLDs.

According to a report unveiled by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the value of China’s primary domain name market – direct domain registrations with official registrars – was about 2 billion yuan ($293.9 million) in 2015, and the secondary market, which means transfers from domain name owners, reached 12 billion yuan.

That’s a total of 14 billion yuan in 2015, which means the current number is considerably higher.
