Chinese domain market report : DD.com and a bunch of chips

China’s domain market has grown remarkably in recent months, as thousands of domain “Chips” were made available, sold primarily by Westerners.

If it weren’t for the game of QXZJ domains that a Hong Kong based fund started, millions of dollars would remain in Chinese pockets. Likewise, tens of thousands of short domains would remain dormant, or even unregistered.

The trading of an obscure commodity such as four letter .com domains created a parallel domain economy, and domains became monetary vessels, with no function other than to move funds around – sometimes, to evade the long-reaching hands of the Chinese government.

We keep track of short domains, between 2 to 4 characters, that change hands among the Chinese; focusing on the .CN, .COM and .NET TLDs.

Although volume of sales has dropped significantly, and “Chips” have lost more than half their value since December, transactions continue to materialize.

Today’s belated list contains a nice two letter domain, DD.com, and a bunch of chips.
