Domain noobs: Here’s what domains you should avoid registering!

TM dilution is not the business of a UDRP

Trademark domains: noob’s delight.

It’s understandable: many newcomers to the wonderful world of domaining are eager to register variations of brands, mottos and slogans that are popular or en vogue.

Only thing is, these are most often trademarked property of famous corporations.

A striking example is this post at top domain forum, DNForum, where an apparent newcomer to domaining listed for sale the next 10 Super Bowl events!

Proudly announcing the domains’ availability, he stated:

“I wanted to own the name to each Super Bowl for the next 12 years and i got them! Very unique and eye friendly and most importantly key word friendly Super Bowl domain .com’s. These are a cash cow to the right person willing to make me a decent offer on ALL of the domain names listed below. I will entertain reasonable offers. “

All of those Super Bowl domains were registered this week, and included:

  • SuperBowlFortyEight.com
  • SuperBowlFortyNine.com
  • SuperBowlFiftyOne.com

DNforum moderators promptly closed this sales thread, as trademark domains are not permitted to be listed for sale.

Yes, stay away from trademarks but the number one thing to avoid is…

Avoid any domain that doesn’t end in .com.

Initially, it may work alright — but only a true .com will not leak traffic and offer any resale value.

yolo – Other TLDs are just fine. You need to peruse the domain sales charts more carefully.

What about the other two TLD’s? ,net and .org? Are they worth anything?
