In 1984, British users could use MicroNet 800 to access a series of BBS services, including electronic mail.
In retrospect, the process was rather cumbersome and brings back memories of the slow Internet of the early 90’s.
First shown on Thames TV‘s computer program, “Database,” this rather “educational” video would walk you through the steps of sending email, 33 years ago. 😀
From the video, one thing that stands out is that people would already use awfully insecure passwords, such as “1234”.
At least, there was zero spam to wade through, at the time.
In case you’re wondering, Micronet800.com is owned by – who else – HugeDomains.
Hey 1234 is my current password
Dn Ebook – LOL
Slick modem. What baud is it?
Jeff – From the MicroNet 800 wiki page:
“Although fast by contemporary standards, Prestel modems were quite slow from today’s point of view (1200 baud download, 75 upload) and the display was just 24 lines of 40 characters, with seven colours and very simple block graphics. “
