Esprit bankruptcy led to EDC.com getting dropped—What happened?

Esprit, an once-iconic fashion brand, exited the US market after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last November.

Just two years after announcing a comeback, the retailer has closed its US stores. Filings by Esprit US Distributions Limited and Esprit US Retail Inc. confirm the full shutdown of the Esprit brand’s American operations.

The company operated from the domain name Esprit.com, registered in 1997. The domain is under the control of its German operations manager but it no longer resolves to a web site with content—it’s parked with PPC ads!

This could be the result of a DNS misconfiguration, as the domain is renewed until 2027. However, it seems that associated domains are not getting renewed.

EDC.com is one of them; the three letter .com domain expired, dropped, and was caught by the SnapNames/NameJet infrastructure, making it the youngest LLL .com domain on the internet.

The domain is now registered with Network Solutions, having lost its original registration date of 1994.

It’s becoming a pattern in recent years: corporate mergers, acquisitions, and bankruptcies often lead to the loss of prime IP such as this domain name.
