From almost a million domains to less than that : XYZ stats are currently conflicting

.XYZ – a free tshirt for a mostly free gTLD.

The XYZ Registry rushed to celebrate almost 1,000,000 registrations of .XYZ domains last week; founder and charismatic CEO Daniel Negari had reasons to be excited as .XYZ became the first gTLD to approach that “magic number.”

And yet, a discussion thread over at NamePros points out that the peak number of one million domains wasn’t actually crossed, and that it’s in fact reversing.

The controversy over .XYZ isn’t new; last year, tens of thousands of free .XYZ domains were allocated by Network Solutions automatically, in accounts with a matching .com.

Two gTLD tally counters, ntldstats.com and namestat.org differ in how they count the stats, but both proclaim to be using the official zone files, as managed by ICANN.

With that in mind, ntldstats.com currently shows 961,480 .XYZ domains with a climbing trend; namestat.org counts the .XYZ registrations at 893,379 with an obviously falling trend.

Both systems show dot .XYZ as the #1 gTLD, regardless. It might take a few more weeks before the trend is stabilized, as June is renewal time for many .ΧΥΖ domains.

Will Rick Schwartz keep his XYZ cherry-popper, or will he drop it? 😀
