Gawker closes down; will the .com be sold?

Gawker, the scandal-seeking, celebrity-unmasking web site made its swan song post today.

Titled “How Things Work,” the farewell post by founder Nick Denton ends 13 years of stories and coverage that sought to unveil the private lives of public figures.

As the result of a lawsuit by Hulk Hogan thanks to a sex video Gawker shared, the online publication continued to shift the onus of its demise to Peter Thiel, a PayPal co-founder who threw $10 million of his own money in Hogan’s lawsuit.

Whether one likes the outcome or not, one thing is certain: there is always room for more publications like Gawker.

Will the domain Gawker.com, registered in 2002, be sold ?

After losing the Hulk Hogan lawsuit, the holding company of Gawker – Gawker Media – went on the auction block and was acquired by Univision.

While the company has plans in mind, Gawker.com is shutting down, while subsidiary sites Deadspin, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, and Kotaku stay alive.

Farewell, Gawker. You won’t be missed.
