Pope domains: Out with PopeFrancis.com — In with PopeLeoXIV.com

Pope Francis‘ demise was met with sorrow by millions of Catholic faithful around the world. He was widely known for his efforts to reform the Catholic Church and to embrace all people, especially those who were suffering.

The election of a new Pope in Rome followed centuries-old rites, culminating today in the selection of Pope Leo XIV—”XIV” being Latin for 14, in case you skipped that class in school.

After Pope Francis died, we noted the rush to register Pope domains speculating on the new Pope’s name; these registrations included the “winner” in this case, PopeLeoXIV.com.

That domain was registered by a domain investor who already listed it on Sedo seeking offers in order to sell it.

The big news of selecting an American Pope for the first time ever led to the registration of AmericanPope.com earlier today.

In even bigger news: In April, the Vatican allowed the domain PopeFrancis.com to lapse, losing control of it. Perhaps lost in the busy final days of the late Pope Francis, whoever was in charge of renewing the domain did not perform that earthly task.

Subsequently, the domain PopeFrancis.com was sold in an expired auction at GoDaddy, closing at $831 dollars. Source: Namebio. It’s now resolves to a GoDaddy lander.

From WHOIS records provided by DomainTools, it appears that the Vatican (Holy See) acquired the domain PopeFrancis.com in 2013. Thanks to the positive legacy of the late Pope Francis, they might seek to acquire it once again.
