Taliban Domains: Entrepreneurship in Afghanistan

Mostafa Ali Ibrahim, entrepreneur with Taliban Domains in Afghanistan.

Decades of war in the remote country of Afghanistan have stolen business opportunities from most local entrepreneurs.

With the majority of the adult population engaging either in arms fighting (“Taliban“) or the growing of poppies to produce opium, it’s refreshing to see a local businessman focus on technology and the Internet.

Mostafa Ali Ibrahim operates his business, Taliban Domains, a local registrar and b2b services provider. The company employs four people, all cousins of Mostafa Ali Ibrahim.

“We get most inquiries local business, like pharmacy, goat farm or bakeries want domain on internet,” says Mostafa Ali Ibrahim.

“Get at office talk business, have coffee and smoke, handshake and next client, very happy.” he adds, raising his arms towards the sky in a prayer.

Taliban Domains is expected to hit a record round of sales in 2013, roughly $1,500 – a fortune by Afghanistan standards. Mostafa Ali Ibrahim plans to invest 50% of it back in the company.

“Always believe in right thing do, is honest. No drugs or weapons, we love Taliban strength as fighter man climb mountain Afghanistan but no illegal act, just domains and good business!”, he exclaims.

Taliban Domains will soon be featured on TED as one of the top emerging markets to watch for technology investment, outside the United States.
