A lot of domainers have acquired plenty of mileage under their feet by running small or longer distances on a regular basis.

While not everyone can commit to a daily routine of running, some do; Shane Cultra appears to be the top marathoner by far. Bruce Marler has completed triathlons, rubbing it in for the less active among us.

There are longer races to be conquered, however.

The Greek hoplite, Pheidippides, is known for collapsing dead at the end of the 26 mile race from Marathon to Athens, announcing the defeat of the invading Persians in 490BC.

Most people aren’t aware of the fact that prior to that race, Pheidippides ran an astounding 150 miles in under two days, from Athens to Sparta, requesting their help.

In his honor, the Spartahlon ultra race is held each year in Greece. Approximately 153 miles long, this ultramarathon race is an international event, taking place between Athens and Sparta since 1983.

Celebrating 30 years, the 2013 Spartathlon race begins today, September 27th, in Athens, Greece. A total of 332 runners will participate, including 32 females. There are 74 checkpoints along the way, providing the runners with water, snacks and electrolytes.
