#UDRP turned 20 years old with a big #WIPO gala that attracted law firms

The UDRP process turned 20 years old this month, as two decades passed since the first domain case in October 1999.

The WIPO celebrated the twentieth anniversary on October 21, with a conference and gala that attracted lawyers, IP attorneys, and law firms, along with brand owners and trademark practitioners.

Over 45,000 UDRP cases have been filed with WIPO’s Arbitration and Mediation Center, all while filing levels continue.

At the WIPO event, a range of informative statistics were presented, along with the inner workings of the panel decision‑making process and its evolution since 1999.

A session moderated by leading experts David Bernstein of Debevoise & Plimpton and Zak Muscovitch of the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) polled the participants’ views on potential changes to the UDRP, scheduled to undergo a formal review by ICANN during 2020.
