What did you do last week?

It’s Tuesday and it’s the proper time this week to ask a crucial question: What did you do last week?

It’s a trap question, specifically for those who work 9-5 or any other shift of employment. Elon Musk asked that question last week by sending an email to a bunch of federal employees. It’s like asking, did you do your job that justifies your pay, whatever that is.

Of course, there’s no clear purpose to that question other than to micromanage an entire country by spreading insecurity among those that are simply doing their jobs. By putting people on the defensive one gets to gauge the sentiment of uncertainty, particularly when they don’t know how to run any department at any government agency.

Here are three better alternatives that focus on productivity while also showing trust and encouraging self-reflection:

“What progress have you made on your current projects and what obstacles are you facing?”
This question focuses on outcomes while allowing the employee to highlight both successes and challenges. It opens a discussion about support and problem-solving.

“How are you prioritizing your tasks and is there anything you’d like to adjust or need help with?”
This question displays interest in the employee’s planning and decision-making process, fostering autonomy and proactive problem-solving.

“What accomplishments from last week are you most proud of?”
This question gives employees a chance to reflect on their personal strengths and boosts morale, while still keeping a focus on outcomes and productivity.

These questions help shift the conversation away from control to collaboration and development.

We can’t expect this much from a billionaire who was planted as head of a department (DOGE) that matches a popular meme coin! It reeks of the TPS reports from the cult classic “Office Space.

Just in case you were wondering, the domain name WhatDidYouDoLastWeek.us was registered following this ridiculous email sent out by Elon Musk. It’s already up and running.

And that’s probably part of what a domain developer or other forward-thinking person did last week.
