Drunk Domainer - Your guide to domain success!

Hey domainers…what’s up, what’s up! Sunday today and while it’s perfectly sunny, there’s a dark cloud floating over my heart πŸ™

No, it’s not because last night I went out, got smashed drinking beer and saw my ex girlfriend making out with my best buddy.

Whatever. They don’t call me Daryl the Drunk Domainer without a reason.

It’s because now that I’m recovering from the hangover, I remembered one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

I could have had it so easy.

You see, in the summer of 1989 being a young dude and everything, I read about Apple in a TIME issue about Steve Jobs.

My dad worked for a Fortune 500 company at that time and he talked about networks and stuff. He told me one day we would all be working from home instead of offices and cubicles.

When Stevo left Apple I was still wearing shorts and sucked my thumb on occasion, but four years later I had this thirst for science and technology. I had my own microscope and a science kit to split water into H2 and O2.

Almost set the house on fire once. Where was I?

One day my dad took me to his work and we walked into the computer lab, a giant hall with computers that stretched wall to wall. Dad called these “supercomputers” and said bigger things were to come, in smaller packages.

I tried to find the plug of those computer monsters but we had to leave before my quest was successful. Dad had to go on a date with his secretary, Karen. She was hot.

Anywho.

Fast forward a couple of years and I found my dad’s samsonite on the kitchen counter, while he was at the store. Or was he porking Karen, not sure. Anyway, I opened it up and came across some company papers talking about technology and about a “5th anniversary party”.

OK, let me pop a cold one and I will spill the beans.

Soooo. Love this beer.

IBM my dad’s employer – was throwing a party about the 5th anniversary of what exactly? I read through the private invitation and what stood out was this line:

“It was an excellent strategic decision to network DEC directly to IBM five years ago, and share the resources without having to co-locate offices. IBM.com now offers a proprietary data transfer protocol that will ensure domination over Apple in the next two to five years…”

Whoah! Who could beat Apple – even though Steve Jobs was not around?

That same evening I asked my dad what the heck was IBM.com.

When he told me about a computer network called “the Internet” I immediately asked my dad if I could have my own name on the Internet. He laughed and said that only companies could do that and it took millions of dollars to form a company like IBM.

OK, admitting the next part will take more beer, so let me pop another one.

As a young dude I was discovering women – real women, not the spazz girls at school. Where was I doing that? Through my dad’s collection of Hustler and Penthouse magazines.

Discovering. Oh yeah…you catch my drift? πŸ˜€

Soooo…

I thought about all this and it came as a flash: what if I could have a company about sex, like those magazines did. Could I own Sex.com ?

Could I? Should I? So I asked my dad.

His response was to ground me for a week. He also locked the sex mags away and I was told that I’d spend the remainder of the summer at Boy Scouts camping.

So there you go.

If I drink too much beer nowadays, it’s because 20 years ago I could have owned Sex.com

Later domainers!

Ouch that must have hurt. It is ashame your father himself didn’t run with the idea but he was probably probably strict like mine was. At one point I came up with StrippingClubs.com for a past employer but I was upset with myself once we parted knowing I got them that ok domain.
