Zombie leads: Afternic’s record of automated follow-ups goes back several years

Putting pressure on a potential buyer’s inquiry in the form of a reminder email is a great tool for domain investors—when done right.

Unfortunately, Afternic’s automation of the process is putting domain investors’ assets at risk: Sending too many emails without any response by the buyer reeks of despair and bad communication habits; eventually, that email gets marked as spam, or worse.

Unlike good old Uniregistry at its prime, Afternic does not provide an option to turn these emails off.

As the majority of Afternic users don’t opt for the self-brokered version (and its associated 5% cost) the onus is on the GoDaddy brokers. One has to constantly remind them that they need to ease on the follow-up emails, something that could be taken care of—if a toggle (ON/OFF) option per inquiry existed.

In fact, such reminders fall on deaf ears and many leads that have been dead for years are being resurrected, without as much as a single interaction by the buyer.

Here’s one such example that was just sent to us:

Such zombie leads are being observed and reported in this NamePros thread where inquiries from as far back as 2016 were resurrected in December 2024 and February 2025!

Unbelievable. Is Afternic so desperate to stir the digital humus and dig up the domain corpses of inquiries long dead? 🤔
