Express Mobile to collect $170 million from GoDaddy, federal jury says

A federal jury in Delaware hit GoDaddy with a massive $170 million verdict last Friday, after finding that its website-building tools infringed two patents owned by Express Mobile, Inc.

The decision caps a lengthy dispute over patented drag-and-drop web site design technology.

GoDaddy said it “strongly disagrees” with the outcome and intends to fight the ruling in court, including through potential appeals.

Express Mobile’s patents were created by its founder, former IBM engineer Steven Rempell. The company first took aim at GoDaddy in 2019, alleging that the registrar’s website building tools copied technology it had already patented. At the time, GoDaddy denied the accusations, challenged the validity of the patents, and highlighted its 2023 courtroom win in a separate but related case brought by Express Mobile.

It remains to be seen if GoDaddy will be recording this as a $170 million loss at the end of the fiscal year.
