Brigade.com: Brokered Sedo deal is a domain gem hidden in the holiday hiatus

The aged domain Brigade.com was sold via a brokered Sedo deal during the holidays. Sedo handled the sale, delivering the domain to the buyer, Philippines-based Bravo Names.

Selling a premium domain such as Brigade.com was the result of hard work by expert domain name broker Mark Ghoriafi, who moved to Sedo late last year.

The sale of Brigade.com commanded $25,000 dollars, a figure that probably shocked many, including the buyer, who noted:

Just successfully acquired a Brent Oxley portfolio type of name!

It means if I did not acquire it Brent Oxley surely would!

Indeed, paying only $25,000 dollars for a dictionary word domain of this caliber, registered in 1995, seems rather low; the new owner has already listed it on various marketplaces for close to one million dollars.

While the new owner is pulling off an “oxley“—attempting to flip a great acquisition into an even greater sale—let’s see a few details about the domain’s ownership history.

Registered in 1995, the domain appears to have been the home of Brigade Quartermasters Ltd, a creative company based in Georgia. The domain began to forward to their web site at ActionGear.com in 1998, before becoming live once again in 1999.

Eventually, Brigade.com became an asset of now defunct Brigade Media, a civic technology platform founded in 2014 by James Windon, Jason Putorti, John Thrall, Matt Mahan, and Miche Capone.

It aimed to connect users with similar views, enabling them to express opinions, engage in debates, and organize petitions. The goal was to amplify users’ concerns and influence policymakers in the US.

In early 2019, Pinterest acqui-hired Brigade’s engineering team, while the remaining assets and intellectual property, including Causes assets, were acquired by the GovTech app Countable. The domain Brigade.com was listed for sale in 2020 and it does appear that the seller was willing to accept a rather low amount of money and close this chapter.

Long story short: There are great deals to be had in domain names and such investments have the potential to generate a substantial ROI down the road.

it’s a dictionary word .This was a steal and if seller needed a broker to sell at that price or to get a better deal and that was the best they could get. It makes one think twice about using a broker who can’t get you the best for your digital asset .I can’t wrap my head around this sale, maybe an explanation will come out later .Seems like sedo is where you can get unbelievable deals as brokers sell some names too cheap as long as they meet their sales target.

@Ai – No, that sounds like a one time “unbelievable deal” as I haven’t seen anything close to this on Sedo before; what you describe is GoDaddy’s brokerage angle.
