Cab, Uber or camel? Don’t get stiffed during ICANN 55 in Marrakesh !

ICANN officials using the transportation system in Morocco.

Morocco offers camel rides, but ICANN attendees aren’t so advised.

ICANN 55 takes place in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The event was postponed during the Ebola virus crisis of 2014.

Since then, other issues have arisen in the African region, including terrorist activities by ISIS, but ICANN appears determined to follow through with the event.

There is, however, some concern about getting safely from the airport to the facility where ICANN 55 will take place.

Want to use Uber? Forget about it, no such thing.

Camel riding might be an option but not while packing suitcases and other luggage.

Taking a cab is a process that can often lead to getting stiffed by the driver.

According to advice given by ICANN conference veteran Alexander Schubert, never accept a metered ride; always negotiate the total cost up front. The trip from the airport to the venue lasts 25-30 minutes, and in a 2006 conference, some unscrupulous drivers took visitors on a 2 hour ride around town.

Schubert also warns those who plan to attend ICANN 55 in Marrakesh to hold onto their luggage firmly. Many cab drivers attempt to remove the luggage from a competitor’s cab, to steal their business!
