Shockwave.com: Gaming platform returns under Bill Karamouzis’ leadership

Greek-Canadian domain investor and gaming entrepreneur Bill Karamouzis, known widely as Bill Kara, has brought back one of the internet’s most beloved gaming brands,  Shockwave.com. Originally launched by Macromedia in 1998, Shockwave helped define casual online gaming for a generation before going dormant under Adobe’s ownership in 2019.

Now, thanks to Bill Karamouzis’ leadership and his team’s passion, Shockwave is officially back.

“Shockwave holds a special place for us,” said Karamouzis. “It’s more than a brand; it’s a piece of internet history that created casual gaming for millions of players. We feel a deep connection to its quirky, accessible spirit. Reviving it is our chance to honor that history while creating new moments of joy for players everywhere.”

The relaunch has been a labor of love for Kara’s owner-operated team, many of whom have been part of his earlier ventures, including Addicting Games.

Together, they’ve rebuilt the Shockwave platform from the ground up, refactoring code, modernizing the infrastructure, and developing a new wave of original titles designed to capture the charm of the early 2000’s while embracing today’s technology.

Karamouzis credited team members Rhys Jones, Erin Torbiak, Matt Mirkovich, Jordan R., Fraser Linton, and the rest of the Shockwave crew for their dedication and creativity throughout the process.

As part of a16z Speedrun, the accelerator program from Andreessen Horowitz, the Shockwave team has been fine-tuning its vision ahead of Demo Day on October 7.

“The guidance from Marcus Segal, Andrew Chen, Samira Behrouzan, Andrew Lee, Joshua Lu, and the entire a16z Speedrun team has been invaluable,” said Karamouzis. “We’re so grateful for their belief in our mission.”

He also extended thanks to Dean Takahashi of GamesBeat, who has covered the gaming industry for more than 17 years.

“From indies to public companies, Dean’s storytelling captures the heartbeat of gaming. We’re incredibly grateful for his continued coverage of this business we love,” he added.

As Demo Day approaches, Kara’s enthusiasm is evident:

“We’re getting ready to present. Help an old gaming introvert get pumped for the big day—share your favorite game in the comments and let’s make some noise.”
