DomainNames.com: Logos don’t sell domains — Keywords do

There’s been a lot of talk and plenty of jokes about the quality of AI-generated logos on DomainNames.com, featuring a little over a hundred domains that are already listed on Afternic. So here’s my take on this subject!

The domains showcased there are the cream of the crop. They don’t need any visual assistance, clever graphics, or matching brand marks to prove their worth. Buyers aren’t going to spend six, seven, or eight figures because the associated logo looks amazing.

Those logos aren’t for the buyers anyway. They’re for the rest of us: The onlookers, the window-shoppers, the fans who admire the spectacle but aren’t going to pull the trigger!

Think of the domain + logo combo cards as collectible items, like Pokemon or baseball cards. You can try to catch them all, but you won’t. The fun is in simply seeing them together, in a collector’s album. That’s what DomainNames.com is all about.

Could the logos have been professionally designed?

Of course. But that would require time, budget, and less AI automation; something best left to the eventual buyer, whose vision (and wallet) will ultimately shape the brand. The GoDaddy new marketplace’s quick AI logos don’t capture that creative essence, and that’s perfectly fine.

The same logic applies to other marketplaces, like Atom, which pairs tens of thousands of domains with generated logos. DomainNames.com, on the other hand, currently features around 110 hand-curated domains, a small enough sample to make the lack of polish obvious. Still, it doesn’t matter.

In the end, logos on domain marketplaces don’t sell domains — keywords do. Strong wordmarks are timeless, powerful, and often all a great domain needs to stand out. So let’s all in the domain community relax and give the GoDaddy guys a break.

Good luck to DomainNames.com.
