As of this morning, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is seizing all domain names that don’t end in the country’s ccTLD, dot .VE.
Juan Ramon Chingalo, manager of the IT Servicios Publicos de Venezuela, stated (translated from Spanish) :
“The Venezuelan government wishes to end the capitalist oppression by America and other countries that are sucking the blood of Venezuelans. Not allowing ownership of .com, and other bad domain endings, will allow Venezuelans to commit their national obligation to the motherland, and register only .VE domain names.”
This unprecedented move by the government of Venezuela, a country where orange juice is more expensive than gasoline, sent chill waves among domain investors.
“Chinga tu madre, pendejo!” exclaimed Jorge B. from Caracas, a domain investor who owns a large portfolio of .com domains in the adult “tranny cam” genre.
“I fock you in the culo, Maduro!” he added, in reference to the Venezuelan president.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Caracas, protesting the austerity measures by the government, and the change in domain ownership policy.
If you are in Venezuela, it’s best to smuggle your .com domains out of the country before the government takes control of your assets.
Pro Tip: Hide your DotComs under a metric ton of cocaine. It will go unnoticed as it passes through the usual export channels.
Jeff – I thought that’d be Colombia? 😛
