China’s 2022 Winter #Olympics lead to #domain squatting of mascot names

Domains Made in China.

In 2022, the Winter Olympiad takes place in Beijing, China.

The Chinese love sports and also cute mascots. The official 2022 Winter Olympics were revealed yesterday.

The Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee announced the winners from over 3,800 designs submitted by people from both China and the rest of the world.

The mascots names: Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon – a panda bear and a red lantern, the latter will be used for the Paralympics in Beijing.

Naturally, Chinese domain “investors” jumped in and registered both names in a variety of TLDs: BingDwenDwen.com and ShueyRhonRhon.com are obviously taken by squatters from China, probably within seconds of the announcement.

The .net and .org equivalents are registered as well, but not the .CN. Are the Chinese ignoring their national ccTLD? ๐Ÿ˜€
