Someone just spent $15,550 dollars on TheBasket.com

TheBasket.com, a dropped domain originally registered in 1997, was auctioned off on DropCatch. The auction ended at $15,550 dollars after an hour and a half of extended bidding.

Why would someone drop 15 G’s on “the basket” keyword pair?

The domain was registered in 1997 by an Italian registrant. According to Archive.org records, the web site was dedicated to basketball, often referred to as “basket” in Europe and by European fans. This is what the title was in 1999:

Primo sito italiano dedicato al Basket Nazionale ed Internazionale

Which translates to:

First Italian site dedicated to National and International Basketball

For a handful of years, TheBasket.com served more as a portal or index of other web sites related to Italian, European, and international basketball. In recent years it was simply parked or contained the domain’s name until its Italian registrant let it lapse.

What will the winner of the DropCatch auction for TheBasket.com do with the domain? Hard to tell but it seems they have excess money to put in this unused basket of a domain.

Big bucks in the “gift basket” market. Also, it’s an oblique reference to “market basket” . . and who knows . . maybe a . . umm . . basket of “deplorables”? :-/

I guess you could ask TheDomains.com if they have any insight into the value-in-use of The+Word domains? 😉

CrankyOldMan – Gift baskets are passe, Amazon Prime delivers all your gifts in a smiling “dick” logo box. 😀
