The Wedding Company finds it hard to rank after domain rebranding

One would thing that exact match, long tail domains rank “automagically” high in Google; Ashish Mishra, founder of The Wedding Company, finds it to be harder than expected.

After a case of domain rebranding from BetterHalf.ai to TheWeddingCompany.com, Ashish Mishra is stumped by the inability to “persuade” Google that after four months of SEO efforts his project isn’t ranking as expected.

“It’s showing for other search engines like bing, duckduckgo, Yahoo but not on Google,” said Ashish on BlueSky, seeking the help of other SEO professionals.

Google search advocate and SEO guru, John Mueller, responded thus:

“This is a competitive space, and the name is quite generic – just because you call your company something doesn’t mean it’ll show up on top in search like that.”

Mueller’s position appears to remain the same as earlier this year, when he questioned the effectiveness of generic domains, such as Swimsuits.com in a since deleted Reddit thread.

Domain investors often go after generic domain names and exact match multi-word domains exactly for their alleged ability to rank well in search engines. Apparently Google requires more time and SEO effort for such developed domains to rank high.
