Bluesky has been gaining popularity as a free social media app that presents a Twitter-like (now X) environment, free of bots and musky toxicity.
For a while now, Bluesky users could switch away from the .bsky.social suffix to using their domain names as their Bluesky handle. The process is explained here and a more technical analysis can be found here.
The ability to become username.com instead of username.bsky.social came with a caveat, however: Once you switched to the domain name, the previous handle would become available and someone could snatch it up.
This loophole has been closed now, as the latest app update Bluesky 1.96 locks down the .bsky.social username when you switch to the domain name.
Keep in mind that only your most recent .bsky.social username is reserved and it does not expire.
