AI.com domain in “Pending Transfer”—Did DeepSeek spend millions to buy it?

The ultra-premium domain AI.com is in pending transfer, indicating that a transaction or other arrangement took place. AI.com is en route to a different registrar.

Domain investor, George Kirikos, has been observing its status and noted that the AI.com transfer lock was removed; furthermore, its WHOIS information changed: Despite a WHOIS privacy setting, its locale moved from Malaysia to Hong Kong.

The latter hosts the HQ of DeepSeek, China’s biggest LLM and AI promise for the future as a disruptor of popular OpenAI technology such as ChatGPT. In recent months, AI.com was pointed to DeepSeek.com, as part of its owner’s strategy to engage or troll potential buyers.

Domain broker Larry Fischer has been the sole appointed broker of the domain, stating that its owner is looking to score a deal close to $100 million dollars.

While the transfer is on-going, we noticed that Larry Fischer’s “for sale” link embedded within the AI.com web site is now gone. This might indicate a sale did, in fact, materialize.

It’s worth noting that DeepSeek founder, Liang Wenfeng, still owns 84% of the company. The rest of the Chinese startup is owned by individuals affiliated with Liang’s own hedge fund, High-Flyer, that manages more than $13 billion dollars in funds.
