McPherson Hospital officials scrambled to provide the general public with an announcement over their former domain name, McPhersonMemorial.org.
The Hospital allowed its former domain name to expire, since three years previously, the hospital name had changed and its official web domain name was updated to McPhersonHospital.org.
According to the announcement, that action was made on the basis that sufficient time had passed to allow the former domain name to expire without causing confusion or issues.
Unfortunately, the domain was most likely auctioned off by Network Solutions, and the new owners apparently set up a web site similar to the Hospital’s, copying the current web site and linking to pharmaceuticals such as Xanax, Valium, Soma and other regulated medication that were not provided by the Hospital.
This elaborate scheme of identity theft and fraud was reported by McPherson Hospital to the local law enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
You can view a screenshot of the bogus web site, as captured by Archive.org in February 2015; a copy of the Xanax page has been cached as well.
