Abuse report: Dot .top is a top TLD, says Spamhaus

With 4.4 million domains, dot .top is the second most populous new TLD, according to ntldstats.

The majority of registrars providing registrations to .top domains are in Asia, particularly in China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Quite often, these registrars, along with their non-Asian counterparts, provide cheap domain registration specials, costing up to $2 dollars per domain.

Spamhaus tracks the spammy qualities of TLDs and has ranked .top domains consistently high.

A report by Spamhaus that was released yesterday shows that despite formal notices sent by ICANN to the .top Registry to address DNS abuse, the situation has worsened by 50% in the last six months.

Spamhaus data shows that a surge in toll road scams utilize .top domains to pass off as E-Zpass and other toll processors, attempting to phish people’s accounts.

What makes .top a magnet for abuse? Here’s what Spamhaus says:

Unfortunately, .top ticks nearly every box of “how not to manage abuse”, including:

  • Low cost registrations
  • Minimal registration requirements
  • Wide availability
  • Bulk registration support

On top of that, relationships with “abuse-friendly” resellers that fail to perform meaningful vetting, only worsen the situation.
