Domain industry companies touting AI and the use of large language models as the next best thing might be putting customers in uncomfortable or even dangerous situations.
Even simple things such as the automated generation of domain descriptions, to be used with “for sale” landers can have some dire consequences.
IP attorney, John Berryhill, pointed out today that AI-generated descriptions of domains can contain copy that could inadvertently become UDRP evidence:
“Attention Trademark Attorneys – @GoDaddy is now handing out evidence of “bad faith intent” for free. Get your ambulance-chasing shoes on, and round up some UDRP clients”
Mr. Berryhill noted that by using GoDaddy AI-generated text landers, one is “going to get screwed badly.”
Here is another such example:
GoDaddy is already using AI to justify and encourage the registration of matches to searches, without any regard for blatant trademark violations:
GoDaddy is not the only one fumbling with AI; freshly accredited domain registrar and marketplace, Atom, issues domain valuations with a varying degree of inconsistency between attempts for the same domain:
It seems that for now, most AI tools should be handled with extreme caution and disbelief—just like when our cave-dwelling ancestors first discovered the effects of fire.
